Martha Werthern
HCPC Registered Clinical Psychologist
About Martha
I am a Health and Care Professionals (HCPC) registered Clinical Psychologist offering either short or longer-term psychological therapies to adults (18+). As a Clinical Psychologist, I draw on various therapeutic approaches, combining a range of therapeutic thought and practice.I have previously worked across various mental health settings within the NHS, where I have supported individuals who experience both lower level as well as complex and enduring mental health difficulties. I currently work with survivors of extreme human cruelty and human rights abuses, and provide different trauma-focused approaches to address Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Various different reasons bring people to therapy. These may include current distress (anxiety, depression, stress, past or recent trauma), a sense of dissatisfaction with life, and a wish to better understand yourself and/or your earlier life experiences.
I draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT, incl. trauma-focussed CBT) as well as Narrative and Systemic practices to address the problems people come up against in their lives. CBT can be helpful when concentrating on a specific difficulty, whereas narrative and systemic lenses can help us think about how meaning is given to experiences, as well as draw on values and how these connect with past and current events in our lives. They also allows us to reflect on how we are in relationship with others and within the systems that surround us. I am also currently completing Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) training, a further therapy to treat and help people move forward from a range of difficulties including psychological trauma, PTSD, and anxieties. We can discuss which approach best suits you in our initial assessment.
Whichever approach we agree on, my aim is to provide a space that feels safe, warm, open and transparent, within which we can start to explore and understand the things that are causing you pain and stopping you from living the life you want for yourself. I hope that we can co-create a space within which you feel heard. Starting therapy is not always easy and I understand the anxiety and ambivalence coming into these spaces may bring. Therapeutic journeys can be difficult ones, and I aim to be there alongside you.
I currently offer in person session on Friday mornings.
Cost per session: £100 individual
