Sophie Mayes
BABCP accredited CBT therapist

I am a BABCP accredited cognitive behaviour therapist and member of the health profession’s council.
I have more than 25 years’ experience working as an occupational therapist in mental health, in a number of different specialities. I have a good understanding of the context of working with different groups of people including drug addictions, personality disorders, psychosis and forensic services.
For the past 12 years however, I have specialised in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) working in the NHS and private practice. Most recently, I helped develop a specialist trauma service in west London, as a senior clinician and clinical supervisor.
While CBT is my area of expertise, I also use acceptance and commitment therapy, compassion-focussed therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy in my clinical practice. I am flexible in the way I work, including ‘walk and talk’ (meaning therapy while walking in London parks). I work with adults from 15 years upwards.
I am a clinical tutor, supervisor and lecturer at Kings College London, the Institute of Psychiatry and University College London on the post graduate Cognitive Behavioural Therapy courses.
I believe therapy, while challenging at times, is a process of discovering the origin and maintenance of the difficulty. I work collaboratively and creatively with my clients, seeing them as the expert in their problems. I am warm, pragmatic and proactive. I am proud to be part of The Couch team, sharing the ethos and passion of psychological therapy.
What I work with:
Qualifications
BSC hons in occupational therapy
Post graduate degree in cognitive behaviour therapy
Post graduate diploma in cognitive behaviour therapy
Additional training
Accredited interpersonal psychotherapist
EMDR – in progress
Narrative exposure therapy
(Sophie currently offers sessions on a Monday evening - her cost per session is £90)
